The Basenji Club of America has a ton of useful information regarding Basenjis.

The educational references below are adapted from the AKC Standard for Basenjis.
Basenjis are known for their fastidious habits and lively, playful spirit. Because they historically worked out of sight of hunters, they can be independent and reserved, preferring to meet strangers on their own terms. Grooming is minimal thanks to their short coat, and many owners appreciate that they lack the typical “doggy” odor.
The strongest bonds form when structure and consistency are paired with respect for their intelligence.
Basenji Anatomy (Labeled Reference)

Once you can identify topline, tuck-up, shoulder placement, and tail set, you begin to truly “see” the breed.
General Appearance
The Basenji is a small, short-haired hunting dog from Africa that uses both sight and scent to hunt. Short-backed and lightly built, it appears high on the leg compared to its length. The wrinkled head is proudly carried on a well-arched neck, and the tail is set high and tightly curled. Elegant and graceful, the whole demeanor reflects poise and alert curiosity.
A good Basenji carries itself with quiet confidence and awareness.
Coat and Grooming
An added benefit of the breed is that it lacks the typical “doggy” odor.
Maintaining the coat usually requires only regular brushing with a hound glove or mitt.
- Nails: Trim every 10–14 days.
- Ears: Check regularly for debris or wax buildup.
- Teeth: Routine brushing is recommended.
Consistency makes all the difference.
Energy and Exercise
Developed in relative isolation, Basenjis retain unique qualities.
In addition to their vocalizations and distinctive gait, they groom themselves like cats and require both physical and mental stimulation.
