Bringing Home a Bellator Puppy

Waiting list approval is required to potentially bring home a puppy from Bellator Kennels
(Basenjis and Alaskan Klee Kai).

Waiting lists are formed before puppies are born and begin with the questionnaire on our Contact Us page.
The second step is an in-person meeting at our home before we have puppies.

Please read all information on this page and the FAQ before emailing us or completing the questionnaire.

Why a Waiting List?

Basenjis are a primitive breed and generally have one heat cycle per year, typically in the fall,
with most puppies born late fall into early winter. Unlike many domesticated breeds that cycle twice annually,
Basenjis follow a more natural reproductive pattern.

Practically speaking, Basenji puppies are usually available one time each year.
Being on our approved waiting list is often the best way to ensure the opportunity to bring home a Bellator puppy.

Alaskan Klee Kai may have different seasonal patterns than Basenjis. However, we use the same
structured approval and planning process so we can place puppies intentionally and support each family appropriately.

Bellator insight: We begin planning long before breeding occurs. Families on our waiting list receive updates as breeding takes place and when puppies are born.

Our Basenji girls generally cycle in September or October. We update progress as the season unfolds.

Our Breeds

Basenjis

Basenjis are intelligent, athletic, and famously independent. They are clean, cat-like, and deeply bonded with their people.
They thrive with structure, consistency, and owners who appreciate a clever and capable companion.

Alaskan Klee Kai

Alaskan Klee Kai are alert, agile, and loyal to their families while often reserved with strangers.
They benefit from early socialization and positive training and do best in active, engaged homes.

Health Testing & What’s Included

All Bellator puppies are placed with appropriate testing and care completed, including:

  • Genetic DNA testing when applicable (PRA / Fanconi)
  • CERF eye exams performed by a canine ophthalmologist
  • ISO microchip with prepaid lifetime AKC Reunite enrollment
  • Up-to-date vaccinations (Distemper / Parvovirus)
  • Written conditional health guarantee and contract
  • Prepaid AKC registration and one month of complimentary pet insurance

Bellator dogs and puppies are raised in our home as family members.
Our puppies are raised using Puppy Culture protocols and receive early socialization and structured positive exposure.

Bellator insight: We understand puppy ownership isn’t for everyone and sometimes life events prevent continuing having a dog.
We never want one of our dogs entering a shelter or rescue—please contact us should anything occur preventing your continued ownership.

Timeline, Visits & Puppy Selection

Our waiting list fills quickly. The first step is the questionnaire. The second step is an in-person meeting.

After breeding, puppies are born approximately 63 days (nine weeks) later.
Puppies go home at 12 weeks of age.

For safety purposes, we generally do not allow visitors one week prior to delivery and until the puppies are three weeks old.
Once puppies are three weeks old, we encourage visits as schedules permit.

After puppies are born, we require a deposit to ensure placement. We accept a limited number of deposits based on litter size and the possibility of retaining one or two puppies.
Deposits are non-refundable and do not guarantee a specific puppy.

We do not make our “show keeper” selections until 8–9 weeks.
After evaluation, we share observations on temperament and characteristics and help match each family with the puppy best suited for their home.
