Basenji Rescue Support
At Bellator, we firmly believe bringing a pet into your home should always be your choice — and where that pet comes from should also be your choice, based on education and what’s best for you, your household, and your future four-legged family member.
No one should be pressured, guilted, or coerced into pet ownership — whether through a breeder or a rescue. The right decision is the one you make with clear information and an honest look at your lifestyle.
Rescue Is a Beautiful Option
While we work hard to ensure none of our dogs ever end up in a shelter or rescue situation, we fully support (and assist where we can) the tireless efforts of Basenji rescue organizations.
If purchasing a Basenji or raising a puppy isn’t the right fit for you, adopting a rescue Basenji may align better with your lifestyle.
Rescue groups carefully screen both dogs and adopters to find the best match — and many Basenjis in rescue have very specific needs.
If you’re turned down for a particular dog, don’t take it personally. Many rescues are protecting dogs with unknown histories, trauma, or special requirements. Their mission is to make sure the rest of that dog’s life is safe, stable, and genuinely happy.
Also — don’t worry if the dog you fall in love with isn’t close to you. Once an application is approved, rescue networks often coordinate volunteer transport so Basenjis can travel safely to their new homes.

Need Help Rehoming a Basenji?
While rescue isn’t our primary focus, we will help Basenjis in need when we can — including assisting with rehoming or temporarily caring for a Basenji while we work to find the right placement.
Bellator contract puppies: any dog bred by us is required to return to us if they cannot remain in the home we placed them in.
Not from Bellator? We may still be able to help — because sometimes it’s not about origin, it’s about doing the right thing for the dog.
If you need help finding your Basenji a new home, please contact us — or reach out to one of the rescue groups listed above.
A Rescue Story: Sweet Mea
This is sweet little Mea — a purebred dark brindle Basenji we helped place as a 6-month-old rescue pup. She is deeply loved by her new family, the Martins, and she is exactly the kind of ending we want for every Basenji who needs help.
Mea’s story started in a hard place. She was the result of two 10-month-old family pets purchased from a puppy mill and bred together in the home.
Her mother had just turned one year old a week before giving birth.
Tragically, Mea’s father passed away at 11 months old from a urethral blockage due to complications from cystinuria — a condition that is known in Basenjis and can be manageable with proper education, diet, and responsible breeding practices.
Stories like Mea’s are exactly why we urge families to obtain Basenjis only through reputable breeders or reputable rescue groups.
Mea was lucky — but not all stories have such happy endings.
